Event planning is an exciting undertaking that can also be overwhelming. But when the end result is a room full of smiling faces, it makes the long hours, lack of sleep, and occasional tears all seem worth it

Event Planning Tips

You may feel anxious about all the things that need to be done, or you may not even know all the tasks that need to be completed. This uncertainty can certainly make it hard to choose a starting point! One sure way to get organized and plan a successful event is by following these four event planning tips:

  1. Build an agenda. Establishing an event schedule is the foundation of a successful conference. Having an agenda mapped out with all the big (and little) things that will take place throughout the day(s) will keep you organized and help you better manage your time. This agenda will also help you identify all the speaker booking and planning tasks that must be completed in advance and allow you to build a conference planning checklist for yourself.
  1. Set a budget. By thinking of all possible expenses and setting a budget early in the planning process, you can determine what is and isn't possible from the get-go. Prioritize what's most important: great food and service, a high-tech audio/visual experience, a high-priced keynote, or … whatever. Once you determine what is the most important to attendees, you can allocate your budget and plan accordingly.
  1. Overcommunicate! It takes a team to run a seamless event. Everyone from the speakers and production staff to the front desk agents to housekeeping staff should be looped-in to the event details. By having the event agenda and pertinent contact information available in one central place, it's easier to help people get answers to their questions quickly.
  1. Prepare for unforeseen problems. Even the most seasoned event planners will inevitably experience a few bumps along the way. The trick is to avoid as many obstacles as possible by doing the prep work, bringing that extra bag of supplies, and overstaffing to cover your bases. By taking the time to prepare, you will be set up to handle anything that may come your way to keep the event running smoothly from start to finish.

Imagine your perfect event and seamless planning.

Culinary Adventure Series

Michigan's Most Spectacular Resort is most always known for its collection of five premier golf courses, but this upcoming Fall season the Treetops culinary team is celebrating Michigan's bounty of fresh ingredients with its Farm 2 Fork Dinner Adventures. There are three autumn dinners to choose from.
The 2019 Treetops Culinary Adventure Series will meld the locally harvested Farm 2 Fork ingredients with Michigan craft beer and wine selections. The Treetops Resort culinary team will prepare a four-course meal made with locally grown and produced ingredients from area farms. Each course of the meal is thoughtfully infused and paired with a different beer or wine produced in the Great Lakes State.

On Saturday, September 14th the evening is coined a 'Michigan Cherry Culinary Celebration' and will feature wines produced by Leelanau Cellars located near the shores of Lake Michigan near Traverse City. The evening will start with a first course of balsamic cherry and honeyed goat cheese bruschetta followed by Michigan mixed greens with dried cherries, pine nuts and a house-made cherry vinaigrette. The star of the evening will be black cherry wood smoked back ribs with Michigan cherry BBQ. Adding to the plate, are whipped sweet potato served with a cherry compound butter and broccolini. Topping off the four courses will be a white chocolate cherry mousse.

On Saturday, October 12th the heat of the harvest season will be celebrated with an evening filled with Michigan Apples. For starters Michigan apple strudel bites prepared in phyllo with mascarpone cheese, followed by an organic spinach salad will be served. The salad is prepared with Maytag bleu cheese and a Granny Smith apple nest with apple champagne vinaigrette. The main course will feature an apple Dijon pork tenderloin with fresh apple relish and paired with Michigan roasted new potatoes and grilled asparagus. A final course of Honeycrisp apple dumplings with caramel cider sauce will be served. Each course will feature a selection of Michigan craft beer produced by Bell's Brewery located in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The final Farm 2 Fork event of the year will be presented on Saturday, November 9th and will feature a 'Holiday Harvest' meal complimented by a selection of wines produced by Black Star Farms located in in the heart of Leelanau County in Suttons Bay. The culinary adventure will start off with Butternut squash bisque in a bread bowl followed by Michigan mixed greens with gorgonzola balsamic vinaigrette. The third course will feature a petit filet of Michigan raised beef prepared with a blackberry demi- glace. Michigan twice baked potatoes and roasted root vegetables will complement the main course. Michigan apple walnut tarts will complete the meal.

Guests are seated family style around a large farm-like dining tables filled with character; from vintage table and glass wear to fresh flowers and greens just picked near the resort.

The culinary Farm 2 Fork experience includes a four-course meal, Michigan craft beer and wine selections and is $99 per person inclusive of all taxes and fees. Overnight packages start at $162 per person based on double occupancy including lodging, the dinner event, and breakfast the following morning.

Each Culinary Adventure event may be 'packaged up' with seasonal activities, making it the perfect getaway.

Eat, Drink, Ski, Repeat

Northern Michigan's Winter Playground is busy preparing for the upcoming winter season -working on new trails, new stations, and a new menu for the 6th season of Skiable Feast. This gourmet winter adventure combines cross country skiing and snowshoeing with a true foodie experience in the way of trail-side stations to eat, drink, warm up, and then ski on for more.

New Trail, New Menu

This year, the trail will take guests on a new, main campus trail adventure fit for everyone to enjoy - winter novice to expert! The trail begins just outside of the Jones Activity Center and traverses down the driving range towards the Extreme Tubing run, then on through a tunnel of trees, eventually meeting up with "Potato Railroad", a nice gentle flat stretch and old railroad grade. Potato Railroad leads to 40 acres of beautiful open land, just before approaching a tree lined-path that takes guests over a natural spring. After a trip around the 40 acre parcel, guests will travel across the base of the downhill ski slopes toward the final stop. Along the way, winter adventurers will enjoy a progressive foodie experience with 5 stations, each uniquely themed. You might find a Charcuterie station with gourmet cheeses, locally smoked & cured meats, dried fruits, and grilled breads paired with chef-selected wine, or you might ski up to a chocolate themed station.

The Patriot Pro-am is an event on the schedule of the Northern Michigan Chapter of the PGA of America. Proceeds from entry fees benefit the Camp Grayling Family Readiness Group. Professionals from all over northern Michigan compete and bring along 3 amateur players. This year 24 teams took part which was a 75% increase over last year after moving the date from May to August.

The event uses a unique Stableford scoring system giving positive points for birdies and eagles and negative points for bogeys, double bogeys and the dreaded other.  Thus, the highest point total determines our winners.

The Treetops Culinary Adventure Series all began with this winter gem and 2017 marks our 4th season of the Skiable Feast. We've coined it a Gourmet Winter Adventure because it's the perfect combination of a little exercise, gourmet food, craft beer, and Michigan wine.

As you meander through the sprawling beauty of Treetops Resort, it's easy to forget you are just a few miles from downtown Gaylord.  Many locals don't even know the rich storybook history of the property where your adventure awaits.

IMG_20160801_161226

A developer named Kirk Gladwin wanted to open a wildlife nature preserve with exotic animals. The project cost over a million dollars and he opened it as a family tourist attraction on a piece of land that was home to 2,000 acres of Timber Mountain Ranch. It was designed like Jurassic Park where the visitors saw movies, rode on a tram, and even had passports to view the animals. Visitors were not allowed to wander through the property, but were made to stay on the tram, until it arrived at an observation point, because the animals were free roaming.

The developer assured the county that he had no plans to introduce any carnivorous animals into the collection like bears or large cats. But once you were inside, there were Bison, Elk, Axis deer, Sika deer, Chocolate Fallow deer, Big Horn sheep and different species of goats. The tram driver would follow the path while the narrator pointed out the animals out and told you about them.

FullSizeRender_1

The Pavilion Restaurant had an elevated observation deck with telescopes on railings to watch animals from. Arriving and departing from the restaurant, the tram drivers used remote control devices to open and close the gates behind them. Some of the animals figured this out and would stand near the gate, waiting for it to open, attempting escape.

After exiting the fenced area, the tram took the guests down the main road to the River Cabin. This cabin was originally where the guests of the hunting ranch across the street from Project Nature, would stay while paying to hunt exotic animals from all around the world. That was all before the park was built.

At the River Cabin, you were allowed off the tram to tour the cabin and view the Llamas in a smaller fenced area. Across from the River Cabin, there was a larger fenced area with two giraffes and even an ostrich. Guests could walk around until they were ready to go and then just hop on the next tram which took you back to the Wilderness cabin, which ended your journey.

At one point, there was some talk of building an outdoor water slide, but the place was shut down before that ever came to fruition. Outside of the fence, people saw black bears and other wild animals.

Project Nature only operated for about a year, but the stories will be told and the animals will be spotted for years to come.

The Skiable Feast takes you to all the tram stops and is available Saturdays in January and February, lasting between 4-5 hours, depending on ability and how many times you stop for photos. This 6 km (3.8 miles) intermediate cross country ski excursion has guides to lead the way, but you and your friends are free to enjoy the day at your own pace.
